1. Butt bumps
They might be pimple-esque, but they’re not acne — they’re irritated hair follicles, usually caused by friction from tight-fitting clothes. Bacteria can also be a factor, and a doctor can help determine if it is.
The fix: Dr. Rebecca Tung, a dermatologist at Loyola University, tells her patients to go up a size in workout leggings, and wear them lower on the hips to increase air circulation. Wearing breathable shorts, and showering with antibacterial soaps right after exercising also helps. No luck? See a derm for prescription-strength topical or oral antibiotics.
2. Excessive sweating
Almost 8 million Americans suffer from hyperhidrosis — the technical name for over-sweating — and it can definitely mess with your mojo. It can happen in the armpits, hands, feet, and sometimes the face. In most cases, you can thank your DNA.
The fix: Wearing fabrics that wick moisture from the skin is a good first move. As is choosing the right deodorant. If over-the-counter stuff hasn’t worked, Dr. Heidi Waldorf, Director of Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York, recommends putting on a prescription strength antiperspirant a few times a week. If that doesn’t cut it, tiny injections of Botox can stop the problem for six months or more. Waldorf says for permanent solutions, non-invasive lasers that destroy the sweat glands or liposuction that removes them can be very effective.
3. Nipple hair
Newsflash: Everyone has it, even if it’s only noticeable on about 30% of us. Thanks, genetics! But sometimes (read: rarely), it’s linked to a hormonal imbalance.
The fix: Option one? Leave it alone. Otherwise, trimming and tweezing work well. (Waxing or shaving can irritate the skin.) Dr. Tina Alster, Director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery, recommends three sessions of laser hair removal, each a month apart, to permanently remove the hair. Note: It won’t get rid of everything (only about 80%). And it’s expensive, but the process is pretty much painless.
4. Funky feet
The 250,000 sweat glands in your feet can wreak havoc. Though foot sweat alone is odorless (thank goodness), when it comes in contact with bacteria … that’s a whole different story.
The fix: To prevent issues, wash your feet daily with soap, keep the toenails trimmed, and make sure to dry well after the shower. Even more, wear breathable shoes and apply a small amount of baking soda in them to absorb odors and kill bacteria. When washing, turn your socks inside out so that dead skin is cleared away.
5. Anal itchiness
The causes include too little or too much washing, especially with harsh soaps, fragranced wipes for cleansing, eczema, and psoriasis.
The fix: Wash daily with pH balance non-soap cleansers and avoid contact with scented or dyed products, which includes toilet paper, wipes, and laundry detergent. Some people may need to use a topical steroid for a short period of time to stop the inflammation.
6. Yeast under your breasts
Moisture can be a perfect breeding ground for yeast. And if you’re more well-endowed, you could be particularly at risk. Why? Moisture likes to live in dark places, like under your breasts. If the creases under your breasts are red and itchy, this is the most likely cause.
The fix: Keep the area dry after the shower — you can even use a blow dryer on cool. Over-the-counter absorbent anti fungal powders can also work wonders on hot, humid days.
